BEDFORDSHIRE

Bedfordshire is not a large County, but very lively!  Its largest town is Luton, in the south of the County, where the airport is known to millions as the departure point of the new cost-cutting airlines which have come to prominence in the last year or two.  Luton has been referred to as ‘the most southerly town in Northern England’ and certainly in its atmosphere, and even in the accents heard in its local pubs and shops, it could almost be mistaken for a town in Lancashire or Yorkshire.  The parish church of St Mary’s is the largest in the County.
Nearby is Dunstable, while in the north of the County is the ancient town of Bedford, and further east lies Biggleswade, an important local center.
Bedfordshire’s stately homes include Luton Hoo, often used as a film setting, and Woburn Abbey with its associated wildlife park.
Bedford Jail, now long demolished, was once home to the author John Bunyan, put ‘inside’ for his strongly nonconformist views.  I wonder what Bunyan would make of modern life – perhaps it’s as well he’s dead.

Girls’ Chess in Bedfordshire

We would be pleased to hear from anyone who would organise a Bedfordshire girls’ team.
