Real Cambridgeshire is not quite as extensive as
modern maps would suggest, because it does not include Peterborough or The Soke,
(these are in Northamptonshire) and Huntingdonshire is, of course, a separate
County.
Centred around the ancient University city of Cambridge, (tip if visiting:
don’t take your car, go by train and then on foot or by bicycle or taxi!),
the County is largely flat, especially in the Fenland country of the north,
stretching towards the town of Wisbech.
Cambridgeshire does claim some hills, such as the Gogmagog hills south
of Cambridge, but they do not rise to any great height.
The cathedral at Ely is said to be the most beautiful anywhere. The countryside to the south of Ely
includes the isolated Wicken Fen, a paradise for bird watchers or observers
of rare wild plants.
And, as a curiosity, it is a fact that a tiny part of the city of London,
hidden behind Hatton Garden and called Ely Place, with one pub (The Mitre) is
legally part of Cambridgeshire!
