CORNWALL

Cornwall – is it a County, or is it a small country of its own, just waiting to get its independence from England?  This is a question that only Cornishmen and women can decide, but it is one of only two English Counties to boast its own language.
The County does not include the Isles of Scilly to the west, which are not regarded as being in any County. It has the longest coastline of any County in England, and most of it is very beautiful – you can, if you have the time and the energy, walk right round it on a well-maintained coastal path.  It includes, at Lands End, the most westerly point on mainland England, and at Lizard Point, the most southerly.
The old Cornish industries of copper and tin mining are now virtually finished, but china clay is extracted near to St Austell.  The main industry of Cornwall now is tourism.  Important towns are Penzance, Helston, Truro and Liskeard.  The Devon boundary runs northwards along the Tamar Estuary, then along the river itself, and meets the Bristol Channel east of the seaside town of Bude.

Girls’ Chess in Cornwall

ECGCF would be very glad to hear from anyone who feels capable of organising a girls’ chess team for this County.  You will need a team of six U14 girls, (this can include girls from much younger age groups) who need NOT be strong players.  The prospect of selection for their County often acts as a stimulant and incentive to concentrate on improving their strength.

If you are a person who could fulfil this very valuable task, please get into touch with ECGCF by telephoning 0202 8660 8564 or 0202 8405 9308, or by email to sgclecgcf@aol.com    We will be able to provide you with a list of schools within your County where chess is already an established activity.  From there on - it’s up to you!
