CUMBERLAND

Don’t confuse Cumberland with Cumbria.  The former is the name of the Real County – the latter is a name given in 1974 to a ‘keg county’ cobbled together from Cumberland, Westmorland, the Furness district of Lancashire, and even a bit round Sedbergh that is in Yorkshire.
Most of Cumberland is wild and hilly country, including much, but by no means all, of the Lake District, and being bounded to the north by the separate Country of Scotland.  Carlisle is the County Town and by far the largest in the County, but the important seaports of Workington, Whitehaven and Maryport lie along the west coast.  A fascinating, but slow, railway journey may be had by taking the train from Barrow in Furness (in Lancashire) right around the Cumberland coast to Carlisle, but be warned, it takes over three hours and the type of train normally used is not for the faint-hearted, or for anyone with a weak stomach.  You will have some beautiful views, but will also pass the infamous British Nuclear Fuels plant at Sellafield.  Keswick and Penrith are important centres near the Westmorland border, and the County also contains England’s highest mountain – Sca Fell Pike at 3210 feet.

Girls’ Chess in Cumberland

ECGCF would be very glad to hear from anyone who feels capable of organising a girls’ chess team for this County.  You will need a team of six U14 girls, (this can include girls from much younger age groups) who need NOT be strong players.  The prospect of selection for their County often acts as a stimulant and incentive to concentrate on improving their strength.

If you are a person who could fulfil this very valuable task, please get into touch with ECGCF by telephoning 0202 8660 8564 or 0202 8405 9308, or by email to sgclecgcf@aol.com

We will be able to provide you with a list of schools within your County where chess is already an established activity.  From there on - it’s up to you!
