COUNTY DURHAM

If you do not know this County, you might well have formed the impression in your mind that it was a grim industrial place to which no-one in their rightful mind would voluntarily go.  Well, if that’s the case, you could not have been more mistaken.  Once associated with such heavy industries as coal mining, steel and shipbuilding, it was not even true at the height of the industrial revolution, as much of the County consists of countryside, often high moorland especially in the west.
The Yorkshire – Durham border runs along the River Tees, and it was near here that George Stephenson, probably England’s best-known engineer, in 1825 opened the first steam-propelled railway, from Stockton to Darlington, using his famous Puffing Billy locomotive.  It was Stephenson who chose the 4 ft 8˝ inches railway gauge that is used (almost) all over the world.
In the north of the County are Gateshead and South Shields on the banks of the River Tyne, on the other side of which lies Newcastle and Northumberland.  But the gem of the County is Durham City, standing proudly on its hill, a real architectural treasure.

Girls’ Chess in County Durham

ECGCF would be very glad to hear from anyone who feels capable of organising a girls’ chess team for this County.  You will need a team of six U14 girls, (this can include girls from much younger age groups) who need NOT be strong players.  The prospect of selection for their County often acts as a stimulant and incentive to concentrate on improving their strength.

If you are a person who could fulfil this very valuable task, please get into touch with ECGCF by telephoning 0202 8660 8564 or 0202 8405 9308, or by email to sgclecgcf@aol.com.

We will be able to provide you with a list of schools within your County where chess is already an established activity.  From there on - it’s up to you!
