DERBYSHIRE

Derbyshire represents the bridge between the Midland and Northern Counties of England, stretching as it does from Glossop in the north west to Swadlincote in the south and Chesterfield and Staveley in the north-east, not too far from the Yorkshire city of Sheffield.  A great deal of the County is outstandingly beautiful and it includes the Peak District National Park where the High Peak rises to over 2000 feet.  Buxton and Matlock are important tourist centres here – not far from the latter is the National Tramway Museum at the village of Crich where you can see (and ride upon) the various types of trams once very common in the streets of English towns.
The very large city of Derby bestrides the south of the County.  This is very much a railway centre – it was once the headquarters of the Midland Railway Company, and British Railways retained a large presence here right up to privatization.  Chesterfield is the second largest town, distinguished by the crooked spire of its cathedral, a lasting warning to carpenters not to use unseasoned timber.
