DEVON

Devon is a large County with both a North coast, facing the Bristol channel, and a much longer south coast stretching all the way from the River Tamar almost to the seaside resort of Lyme Regis, which is just over the Dorset border.
The important naval city of Plymouth, on the Tamar estuary, is the largest town, closely rivaled by Exeter and Torquay, the latter being best known as a seaside resort.
In the north of the County, important centres are Bideford, Barnstaple and Ilfracombe; somewhat further around the coast are the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, separated for motorists by a 1 in 3 hill, (pedestrians can use a funicular railway).
There are some really wild places in the County such as Exmoor, which was the setting for the famous Sherlock Holmes novel, The Hound Of The Baskervilles, and Dartmoor, which boasts the highest peak in Southern England as well as, reputedly, Britain’s hardest prison at Princetown.
Most of the County is very beautiful and it is not surprising that it has become a major tourist attraction.  If you go there by car, try to travel at off-peak times or you could find yourself stuck in heavy traffic in many places.
