GLOUCESTERSHIRE

The much-hated keg county of Avon has been got rid of.  Gloucestershire includes the whole of Bristol at its southerly end, one of the largest and most important cities of England and one with a long and proud seafaring history.  Further northeast, the County includes both sides of the Severn Estuary and then the river itself up to the large County Town of Gloucester and beyond to Tewkesbury on the Worcestershire border.  Cheltenham is another important town which once had the distinction of having the largest bus station in England.
Much of the County is very beautiful, with picture-book small towns such as Stow on the Wold, Cirencester, and Fairford.  The source of the River Thames lies in Gloucestershire at Thames Head, where a statue of Father Thames was placed; however, vandals damaged this, so after restoration he was removed to the side of St John’s Lock (the top one) at Lechlade, still within the County, where you can see him to this day.
Many people cross the River Severn by the new Severn Bridge which is part of the M4, or if traveling by train go underneath through the Severn Tunnel.  But there once was a Severn Railway Bridge as well – until it was struck by a badly navigated tanker.  The iron structure was considered to be too badly damaged to be repaired, but you can still see the bridge piers sticking out of the water near Lydney.

Girls’ Chess in Gloucestershire

ECGCF would be very glad to hear from anyone who feels capable of organising a girls’ chess team for this County.  You will need a team of six U14 girls, (this can include girls from much younger age groups) who need NOT be strong players.  The prospect of selection for their County often acts as a stimulant and incentive to concentrate on improving their strength.

If you are a person who could fulfil this very valuable task, please get into touch with ECGCF by telephoning 0202 8660 8564 or 0202 8405 9308, or by email to sgclecgcf@aol.com.

We will be able to provide you with a list of schools within your County where chess is already an established activity.  From there on - it’s up to you!
