HEREFORDSHIRE

This is rural England at its most delightful.  The River Wye runs right through the County from Hay on the Welsh border, through the County Town of Hereford (which, unlike some other towns, has not become too large to be pleasant) and onwards down through Ross to Symonds Yat on the southern border.  Unspoiled by power boats or commercialization, the Wye Valley is a treasure, a part of what makes us English.
There are no really large towns in Herefordshire, just pleasant local centres such as Leominster (pronounce it ‘Lemster’), Bromyard, Kington, Ledbury, Ross and so on.  The Boundary Commisioners once forced Herefordshire into a sort of shot-gun marriage with next door Worcestershire to create the Keg County of Hereford and Worcester.
But, as anybody with half a brain would have known, it did not work, and administratively, the two Real Counties are now separate again.
Near the Gloucestershire border lies the village of Much Marcle.  Drive there on a sunny spring or summer day, enjoy a delicious Ploughman’s Lunch outside the local pub, and then visit the cider-making farm of Weston Brothers.  They will show you around, and afterwards you can, if over 18 of course, buy a flagon of perry or cider to take home with you – you will not find finer anywhere.

Girls’ Chess in Herefordshire

ECGCF would be very glad to hear from anyone who feels capable of organising a girls’ chess team for this County.  You will need a team of six U14 girls, (this can include girls from much younger age groups) who need NOT be strong players.  The prospect of selection for their County often acts as a stimulant and incentive to concentrate on improving their strength.

If you are a person who could fulfil this very valuable task, please get into touch with ECGCF by telephoning 0202 8660 8564 or 0202 8405 9308, or by email to sgclecgcf@aol.com

We will be able to provide you with a list of schools within your County where chess is already an established activity.  From there on - it’s up to you!
