HERTFORDSHIRE

Hertfordshire stretches from Watford to Bishops Stortford and from Hemel Hempstead to Barnet, (although part of the latter is in Middlesex). The western part of the County has rolling hills which flatten off in the east near the Cambridgeshire border. The old County Town of Hertford is of great interest and can be reached from London by two alternative routes - the old Great Northern line from Kings Cross to Hertford North, or the possibly more interesting Great Eastern route from Liverpool Street to Hertford East.
In the south west of the County is the ancient city of St Albans, with its cathedral, its Roman remains, and what is said to be the oldest public house in England.  But Hertfordshire is not all about history: high-tech industry has established itself around Stevenage, and Welwyn Garden City was one of Britain’s very first ‘New Towns’ designed to be an experiment in modern living.
