LINCOLNSHIRE

Lincolnshire spreads from the flat shores of the North Sea westward to the Midlands and north to Yorkshire. Although it is in many places flat, there are the rolling Lincolnshire Wolds and the central chalk ridge on which the beautiful County town of Lincoln is situated.  Almost all of the County is rural, and there is an air of isolation and loneliness with the wide skies seen in many parts of Holland – in fact Holland is the name given to one of the three administrative divisions into which Lincolnshire was divided until 1975, the other two being Lindsey and Kesteven.  These fulfilled a similar purpose to the three Yorkshire Ridings.
There are, however, some largish towns, such as the steel centre of Scunthorpe in the north west of the County, the important port of Grimsby, (adjoining the seaside resort of Cleethorpes), and the important agricultural centre of Grantham – the latter the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher, so far Britain’s only woman Prime Minister.
There is plenty for the tourist, from the splendour of Lincoln Cathedral, (the third largest in the country) to the unspoilt and much under-valued coastline, and the important and interesting wildlife reserves.

Girls’ Chess in Lincolnshire
The Girls’ organiser is Dr Robert Dale, whose daughter Hannah, almost out of her junior years now, is a very strong player and always ready to help younger and less experienced players to improve their game.
