MIDDLESEX

Middlesex is alive and well! It comprises most of London north of the River Thames and west of the River Lea. The boundary with Hertfordshire gets very confusing around the Barnet area, with part of Barnet in Hertfordshire and part in Middlesex. Enfield is also a part of Middlesex.
Although most of Middlesex is a bustling busy urban sprawl, it is possible to find peace and seclusion if you look for it – small villages such as Harefield near Northwood still retain some of the peace of earlier times.
A walk over Harrow Hill or Hampstead Heath in Spring is rewarding, as is a stroll along the banks of the Grand Union Canal from Brentford towards Uxbridge.
Perhaps the poet John Betjeman understood Middlesex as well as anyone.  Certainly his work conveys the atmosphere of the County in a convincing way.

Girls’ Chess in Middlesex

Middlesex have plenty of strong girl players, but an effective girls’ organiser is needed. At opposite ends of the County are two excellent chess set-ups in Barnet and Richmond respectively.  If only these two would combine their efforts, Middlesex would once again have an effective girls’ team.
