RUTLAND

Rutland is England’s smallest County, but sets an example that its larger neighbours would do well to emulate. The boundary commissioners tried to absorb it into Leicestershire, but the Rutlanders were not having it – they fought and eventually regained their full County status.
Largely rural, the County contains only two small towns, Oakham and Uppingham.  Beer drinkers will know the County for the excellent Ruddles beer, which is brewed here.
The County contains one of Britain’s largest artificial lakes, Rutland Water, which is a reservoir and used for sailing also.  A peninsula sticks out in the lake, with a hill on which is the village of Hambleton, almost completely surrounded by water, with its pub, towered church, and hall.
