Real Surrey includes the area at present administered by
Surrey County Council, and also the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, the
London Boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Merton, Southwark, Sutton and Wandsworth
and that part of Richmond south of the River Thames. It also includes
Gatwick, at present administered by Sussex.
The County includes a great variety of types of environment. The north-east of the County is urban
South London, with all of its problems, but also with all of its vitality and
excitement. People of every possible
ethnic background live there, and for 99.9% of the time they do so in perfect
harmony, all making their contribution, and learning from each other as they
do so.
Move a bit further south, and you are in the business environment of Croydon,
with its sleek new trams gliding between skyscraper blocks, its world-class
shopping center and Concert Hall. Or
go out westwards to the leafy stockbroker belt around Cobham, Sunningdale or
Virginia Water.
Surrey contains the highest point in SouthEast England at Leith Hill in the
south of the County, as well as some real beauty spots such as Friday Street
or Abinger Hammer. And the age of the
horse is not past in Surrey, as horse racing and other equestrian sports are
firmly rooted here.

Girls’ Chess in Surrey
Surrey is the "home
county" of the ECGCF. In Chess terms, Surrey girls have been
outstandingly the most successful and consistent over the last 30 years.
The most famous woman player is undoubtedly WGM Susan Lalic, also an IM on
the men’s scale. Susan has
consistently set a high standard of play, but has always kept in touch with
junior chess, and is always pleased to help younger or weaker players to
improve
