WILTSHIRE

What’s Wiltshire got?  More or less the lot!  There’s the huge ‘city’ (it’s not one yet) of Swindon in the north, once a railway town and the headquarters of the Great Western.  There’s Salisbury in the south, with the highest Cathedral spire in Britain at 404 feet.  There’s  a pleasant group of towns like Bradford on Avon, Melksham and Trowbridge in the west.  There are stone circles at Avebury and Stonehenge.  There’s Devizes near the centre, with the matchless flight of 30 Caen Hill locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal, and Wadworth’s brewery, which not only actually looks like a brewery, but brews some of the finest ale you can consume.  And there’s Salisbury Plain, upon which many a reluctant National Serviceman has shivered in his tent far from home on a January night.
