This competition was begun in 2003 as a U11 competition for teams of 6 girls
representing the Real Counties of England.
This Cup is so named in honour of the Yorkshire comedian and sometime straight actor
Arthur Whitehead, who provided the initial finance for the ECGCF to be set up. Arthur was
a very strong chess player, although he never joined or played for a club. He was a
tactical wizard who knew dozens of trappy opening lines and brilliancies off by heart,
and he had the knack of leading the game into a position from which one of them could
be applied.
Arthur Whitehead died in January 2003, aged 85.
The winners of the Competition so far are shown in the table.
