Royal Grammar School Guildford Tournament, 22-23 November 2003

This old-established tournament had a two-day Trophy section for the strongest players, but no girl took part in this (10 boys played). There were two other U18 sections of one day each. The U18A on the Saturday had 12 players in all, including 3 girls. The winner was Abi Fryer of Sussex scoring 5/5. Rachel Peat [Surrey] was 2-5 with 4/5, and Vaishnavi Khatau was 8-10 with 2.
In Sunday's 18B, the 21 boys were undisturbed by the presence of any girl.
There were also two U12 sections, one on each day with six rounds in each. The Saturday event only attracted 20 players including three girls: Zoe Geidelberg, formerly Hampshire but now a Surrey resident, scored 3½; Jenna Bhimani of Middlesex scored 3, and Soriah Williams of Kent scored 2½.
The more popular U12B on the Sunday had no less than 53 players, of whom only four were girls: 1-2 Sheila Dines [Surrey], 5½; 24-32 Thilagini Anandajeyarajah [Surrey], 3; and the other two, presumably Surrey were Sabrina Nardini and Victoria Banks, 1 each.

Wiltshire win ECGCF Western Region again, Swindon 22 November 2003

For the third year running, Wiltshire were the winners of the ECGCF Western Region cup, with a decisive victory over the only other entrants, Oxfordshire. Missing their two strongest players, Naomi Miller and Maria Walker, Oxfordshire nevertheless tried very hard, and in the last round Larissa Cooke had a splendid victory over the Wiltshire Board 1 Nicola Thomas, three years her senior. 50th Richmond Rapidplay, 9 November 2003

No girl played in the Open section.
Major U160: 24 players, 1 girl: Naomi Miller 4/6 placed 3-7
Intermediate U120: 29 players, 2 girls: Stephanie Barraclough [Sussex] 3/6 placed 14-16 and Sheila Dines [Surrey] 2/6 placed 22-24.
Minor U80 33 players: Thilagini Anandajeyarajah [Surrey] 3/6 placed 15-20: and Margaret Goodacre [provenance unknown, possibly an adult] also 3/6 placed 15-20.
A word of praise and thanks should be added at this point to Richard James for all his hard work in running these and many other events for so long, as well as the excellent Richmond Junior Chess club: while still being willing to help others, including organisers, less experiended and able than himself.

Fifty Thousand Hits!

We are very pleased to see that the SGCL/ECGCF website has now passed the significant total of 50 000 hits since it was begun in 1999. This must mean that at least some people have found the site useful. Please note that on our Fixtures List we are now providing printable location maps for many important fixtures.

Surrey Girls U14/U90 Fixtures

Awaiting new date: Surrey Girls v Sussex, at Coulsdon Chess Club.
Team selections for these two matches will be published in mid-January. It is unlikely there will be any other fixtures before then. Kent have withdrawn so the above will be the only two Zonal matches.

All England Girls Chess Championships, Southern Region: East Grinstead 8 November 2003

In all, 86 girls were present to play in this inaugural event. David Fryer of Sussex and his helpers had provided an excellent playing hall at Fonthill Lodge School just a mile from the centre of East Grinstead, and all arrangements worked well, with WIM Ruth Sheldon present to help as trainer.
