Another Basman Spectacular!

Full credit to our local chess impresario Mike Basman, organiser of the UK Chess Challenge, for always keeping chess in the public eye with well-organised and attractive events. The latest took place on Wednesday 20 August at British Land's Broadgate Exchange Square (adjacent to Liverpool Street station), where current US women's champion Jennifer Shahade (22) played an Exhibition Match (featuring a giant chess set) against British stars Lorin D'Costa [Hertfordshire] and Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson [Surrey]. Jennifer played two games against each of the British stars, resulting in a win for USA by 3½-½, Lorin drawing his final game. The weather was kind and many city office workers and others clearly enjoyed the occasion. Aly, who has agreed to accept the Surrey Girls captaincy for 2003-2004, has recently returned from her successful participation in the Biel International Chess Festival in Switzerland, (see below).

Blackpool Chess Festival, August 2003

Very little news of girl players in the above, but in the Novice section of the Rapidplay, Victoria Crompton [Cheshire] scored 3½/6.
