Four Nations Chess League, 2002-2003
The final weekend of this season took place from 24-26 May when Rounds 9, 10 and 11 were
played. Star of the weekend was undoubtedly Robyn Smith of Oldham, Lancashire: playing for
Poisoned Pawns, Robyn had three straight wins, two of them over opponents considerably higher
rated than herself. Poppy Aarons of Middlesex also had a fine win in Round 10 when she defeated Oxana
Kosteniuk, rated 2184.

Wey Valley win U11 Mixed, Wroughton, Wiltshire 10 May 2003
For the second year running, the Wey Valley U11 (Mixed) team was the winner of the EPSCA U11 competition. Four girls took part and scored as follows: Board 7, Sheila Dines 2.5/3; Board 10, Marissa Stenning, 2.5/3; Board 19, Jessica Thilaganathan, 3/3; Board 20, Thilagini Anandajeyarajah, 3/3. Surrey Junior Congress, New Malden 17 May 2003
This event, ably organised by SGCL President Susan Lalic and Graeme Buckley, had a total entry of 214. Good news for girls is that the outright winner of the U11 Major was Jessica Thilaganathan, while Fay Birch was the outright winner of the U9 Major. ECGCF/Batsford National Girls Team Tournament, New Malden 11 May 2003
Some 25 teams took part in this event. The U18 and U13 Sections were combined, and in
this combined section, the overall winners were the Lady Eleanor Holles U13 team who thus
took the U13 Gold Medals. The U18 Gold went to the Surrey Queens, a group of friends
organised by the Dines family.
In the U11 (ten teams), gold went to the strong team from St. Michaels, Aughton, Lancashire
who scored a tremendous 15½/16.
In the U9s, two teams ties for equal first place, so both
received gold medals. The teams were Wimbledon High School and Rowan Prep. A team.

London Girls v The Rest of England Girls, U11 match, Streatham 5 May 2003
The traditional London v The Rest match ended, as in recent years has always been the case,
in a large victory for The Rest of England, this time the score being 31½-8½. To see the
