Hastings International Chess Congress 2002-2003
In the Challengers section, (nine rounds), females scored as follows: Joanna Dworakowska [POL], IM, 5; Heather Richards [ENG], WIM, 5; Lucy Broomfield [ENG] 3½; Marte Egeland [NOR] 3½; Louise Macnab [SCO] 3; Siegrun McGilchrist [SCO] 3; Oxana Kosteniuk [USA] 3; Poppy Aarons [ENG] 2½; Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson [ENG] 2½; Sarah Hegarty [IRL] 2.
London Junior Chess Championships, Northwick Park 14-15 December and 28-30 December 2002
The final sections of the London Junior took place on 28-30 December. They were as follows:
U21 and U18 Fide-Rated 43 players, none of whom were girls.
U16 There were 29 players including 3 girls. Best girl was Chantal Sirisena [Surrey]
placed 12-18 with 3/6, others Hannah Lowry-O'Reilly [Ireland] placed 19-23 with 2½, and Selina
Khoo [Surrey] placed 24-26 with 2.
U12 Major This notoriously tough tournament had ~93
players of whom Best Girl was Katie Hale [Somerset] placed 8-17 with 6/9, then came Claire Wu
[Middlesex] at 18-26 with 5½, Sheila Dines [Surrey] at 27-42 with 5, Amisha Parmar [Derbyshire]
and Antonia Round [Middlesex] each placed 43-51 with 4½, Thilagini Anandajeyarajah [Surrey] and
Sally Fletcher [Suffolk] each placed 75-82 with 3, and Leteefah Messam-Sparks at 83-88 with 2½.
U12 Minor About 90 players, best two girls were Zoe Geidelberg [Surrey] and Anjali
Lakhani [Nottinghamshire] each placed 4-5 with 6½/9, then came at 12-20 Jyoti Parmar [Derbyshire]
with 5½, at 21-26 Kimberley Hirst-Jones [Essex] with 5, at 27-30 Ranita Klimach [Essex] with 4½,
at 42-46 Alexandra Lillie* with 3½, and at 49-54 Alexandra Torregrosa-Jones [Wiltshire] with 2½.
Stephanie Hale [Somerset] acting as a filler scored 2/3.
U8 There were about 55 players.
Best Girl was Stephanie Hale placed 6-10 with 5/7, then came at 15-24 Briony Brock* and Megan
Owens [Monmouthshire] each with 4, at 25-31 Lydia Smith* with 3½, and at 52-53 Lucy Peters*
with 1.

Results from the earlier part of the LJCC, 14-15 December 2002:
In the U14 Major, Surrey star Chantal Sirisena scored 3½/6 to become Leading Girl,
Best Southern Counties Girl, and London Girl Champion.
In the U14 Minor, Hannah Lowry-O'Reilly [Ireland] was placed 3= with 4½/6, Leading Girl.
In the U10 Major, London Girl Champion was Sheila Dines [Surrey], and Best Southern Counties
Girl was Alexandra Botteman [Middlesex].
In the U10 Minor, outright winner was Abigail Wood [Hampshire] with 6½/7, of course
also Best Girl.

Terence Chapman Group Prixette, Final Placings as at 15 December 2002
England No 1 WGM Harriet Hunt has once again taken the Prixette.
Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] was second, and WIM Heather Richards of Kent was third.
The three age-related prizes, which are available only to those outside the top
three, were won by: U18, Teresa Khoo [Surrey]; U14, Naomi Miller [Oxfordshire];
and U12, Poppy Aarons [Middlesex].

U14/U90 News 8 December 2002
In an Eastern Division match, Coulsdon CCF were defeated 15-9 by Kent. The only girl involved was Caroline Foster on Board 12 for Coulsdon, but she lost both games.
44th Richmond Rapidplay, 1 December 2002
In the Open section, there were 12 players and just one adult women, England No 1 WGM
Harriet Hunt, who was joint first, (with Mike Basman), scoring
5/6.
The U160 Major had 13 players, the sole female being Sarah Hegarty [Surrey], placed
8-9 with 3/6.
In the 25-player U120 Intermediate there was 1 girl and 1 woman. Naomi Miller
[Oxfordshire] was placed 7-10 with 3½, while our favourite local organiser Pat
Armstrong was 11-16, with 3.
The largest section as usual was the Minor U80 whose 30 players included four girls:
5-8 Antonia Round [Middlesex] 4/6, 9-12 Katie Houstoun [Surrey] 3½, 13-20 Kate Richards
[Middlesex] 3, and 28-30 Charlotte Desouza [Surrey] 1.
