Four Nations Chess League, 2002-2003 Season
9-10 November 2002Play in the 4NCL started last weekend 9-10 November for Divisions 3 and 4 only. Division 4
is new, and in what must be seen as a retrograde step, 4NCL have decided that the inclusion of a
female player will not be mandatory in Division 4.
However, the requirement continues for Divisions 1 to 3 and we have compiled a list of female
registrations which may be of interest. To access this list, Click Here
. Results of girls playing in 4NCL are being presented in a simplified format this season:
Only their round-by-round scores are given, in this table, (the results of adult women also are
included). To see the opponents the girls faced
in each round, you will have to access 4NCL's own website, which will shortly be available
through our Links page.

35th Chess Olympiad, Bled, Slovenia 25 October - 11 November 2002
England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales all had teams competing in the beautiful mountain
resort of Bled. The players for England and Ireland were all adult women, but there were two
15-year olds playing, both ECGCF members: these were Louise Macnab for Scotland and Suzie Blackburn
for Wales.
All the women's teams deserve congratulations for their performance. Outstanding was Heather
Lang for Scotland with 70%, (England's Jovanka Houska was only a whisker behind), but all in all
the four home countries should feel well satisfied with the outcome.
We have summarised the
results of all the four countries for you:

Surrey and South Eastern Counties Girls Chess Congress, Epsom 3 November 2002
Just 50 girls sat down to play in this event, a reduction of over 50% on 2001. Just why
numbers were so low is not obvious.
The brightest spot was the U14/U18, where we had 11
players all of good or reasonable strength. Double winner was Sarah Hegarty of Surrey, who thus
took first prize in both U18 and U14 age groups, as well as the Elaine Saunders trophy (U18) and
the Kim Williams trophy (U14). Sarah had a perfect 5/5 score. Second was Claire Morris, a most
welcome visitor from Oxfordshire, with 4/5.
Twelve girls played in the U12, which was won by
Abi Fryer of Sussex, with 4½/5. But since Abi does not have a Surrey qualification, the Ann
Hopton Trophy (Ivory Queen) went to second-placed Anita Tse of Surrey, a very much improved
player, who scored 4/5.
The U10 also had twelve players, and here Sheila Dines of Surrey was
clear winner with 5/5, taking the Yellen Trophy. Second was a strong visitor, Abigail Wood of
Hampshire, while a visitor from Lancashire, Ciara Pugh, was one of five players placed joint
third, and also received the Distance Prize.
The largest section was the U8 where all 15
entrants arrived to play. Winner, again with 5/5, was Caroline Foster of Surrey, also receiving
the Susan Walker Trophy. Second was our strong Monmouthshire visitor, Megan Owens, with 4/5,
but Megan just lost out, by about 30 miles, on the Distance Prize!. In joint third place were
Sarah Craig and Sophie Holmes with 3½, but as Sophie is a U7, she was the winner of Billy the
Bear.
Full crosstables of results can be found Here.
Regretfully, this event, for which the excellent accommodation at Blenheim High School was used,
incurred a large loss, and this year's poor attendance calls into question whether the event
will continue to be held, at least in its present form. SGCL and ECGCF still lack any sponsor,
(except for one specialised event in May each year), and events that lose this amount of money
clearly cannot go on indefinitely.
