CCF Chess Challenge 2002, 21 September 2002
The players ranged from U15 down to U7 (as for 2001-02). Girls' results: 2-4 Sheila Dines (U9G: Best Girl) £42, 5-8 Thilagini Anandajeyarajah, Georgia Blake-Mills (both these girls Surrey).
Silver Awards for Heather and Teresa
WIM Heather Richards [Kent] and Teresa Khoo [Surrey] have each been awarded one of the eight
BCF/Terence Chapman Silver Awards, worth £500 each. Here's what the BCF have to say about them:
"WIM Heather Richards, 19, of Whitstable, Kent, is England’s fastest improving woman player.
She has competed in six world girls championships and will play on third board for England in
next month’s FIDE women’s Olympiad in Bled, Slovenia."
"Teresa Khoo, 16, of Lady Eleanor Holles School and Weybridge, Surrey, has competed in two world
girls championships, led England girls in the 2002 Faber Cup, and was runner-up to WGM Harriet
Hunt in the 2001 Terence Chapman Prixette. Last month in the Major Open at Torquay Teresa
totalled 7/11, retaining her British Girls U18 title with a 2200 rated performance."
We would like to congratulate Heather and Teresa on being so honoured, and I am sure that
everyone who knows either or both of these girls will also wish to be associated with this.
Leek Congress, 13-15 September 2002
Gus Brain writes that this year's Leek Chess Congress had an increased entry in terms of
both GMs and females competing. The total of 134 included 4 GMs and 12 feamle entrants.
In the Open section (23 players), WGM Harriet Hunt was placed 4= with 3½/5. The rest of the Congress
was divided into four equally sozed sections. In the 178 to 132 section, Suzie Blackburn [Cheshire] was
5= with 3/5 and shared slow starter prize. In the 128 to 108 section, Ljubica Lazarevic [Essex]
was 11= with 2½/5, Molly Moruzzi was 22= with 1½/5, while Charlotte Wilcox withdrew on 1/3.
In the 106 to 84 section, Sandra Blackburn was 7= with 3/5 and shared the slow starter prize,and
Yangshan Yu was 20= with 1½/5. Finally in the sub-84 section there were 28 players with girls'
results as follows: Victoria Crompton [Cheshire] 1= with 4½/5, Amisha Parmar [Derbyshire] was 8=
with 3/5 and shared slow starter prize, and Megan Moruzzi, Jyoti Parmar [Derbyshire] and Kate
Smith all had 2/5 placed 18=. All girls Staffordshire except where noted.
U14/U90 News
David Millward, the Conductor of the SCCU U14/U90 competition, has announced that the
division of the various
teams that have entered into zones will be as follows:
Chiltern Zone: not yet finalised
Northern Zone: Hertfordshire, Middlesex, and Richmond
Eastern Zone: Coulsdon, Kent, Surrey Boys
and MGCA
Southern Zone: Surrey Girls, Hampshire and Sussex.
Thus our Surrey Girls team
(captain: Katie Houstoun) will have four fixtures, home and away against Hampshire and Sussex.
Our home fixtures will be played at Coulsdon Chess Club. The dates will be announced as soon as
possible.
ECGCF Southern Region Jamboree, Coulsdon 21 September 2002
For the fifth year in succession, Surrey were the winners of this event, the final scores after three rounds being Surrey, 15½; Middlesex, 7; and Sussex, 4½. Full details are available Here., and results of individual games Here.
43rd Richmond Rapidplay, 15 September 2002
Not so many girls as usual took part in the first Richmond Rapidplay of the new season, with
none at all in the Open (16 players) or the Major (19 players), although the adult player WGM
Jovanka Houska did very well in the former with 4/6 placed joint third
There were two girls
in the Intermediate U120: Naomi Miller [Oxfordshire] did very well with 4½/6 placed joint 4th
while Karla Houska [Berkshire] scored 2/6 placed 29-34.
There were
four girls in the U80 Minor (36 players in all), who placed as follows: 6-10 Katie Houstoun [Surrey]
scoring 4/6; 15-21 Kate Richards and Antonia Round [both Middlesex], each 3/6; and 36 Soriah
Williams [Kent], 0.
Surrey Girls Trial Tournament, Streatham 14 September 2002
This 5-round tournament was won by Louise Hanger: she will be the vice-captain of the new Surrey Girls team to play in the SCCU U14/U90 competition, (the captain will be Katie Houstoun who was only able to play in one round of the Trials, in which she defeated Sheila Dines). Coulsdon Longplay Congress 7-8 September 2002
Of the 99 players who took part in this event, some 14 were female of whom 10 were girls, i.e. juniors. They scored as follows: In the Open, Jessie Gilbert and Teresa Khoo, [both Surrey] each 2. In the U170, Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] 4 joint first, Naomi Miller [Oxfordshire] 1½. In the U130, Chantal Sirisena [Surrey] 3½, Selina Khoo [Surrey] 3, Danielle Gross [Middlesex] 2. And in the U90, Sheila Dines [Surrey] 2½, Soriah Williams [Kent] 1½, and Caroline Foster [Surrey] 0. I am indebted to Scott Freeman for these results.
