In the first match, London were defeated 30½-17½ by England Lions, and the other England team, England Unicorns, defeated Richmond by exactly the same score, 30½-17½. St. Mark's School of Chess

Following its recent U13 Championship title success in the ECGCF/Batsford National Girls' Schools Championships, St Mark's School of Chess in Purley has seen another of its teams ('Hesperides' - aged 14 and under) competing in the semi-finals of the Plate event in the BCF National Club Championships Minor (U125) Section. Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson, Sunena Patel, Louise Newlands, Joanne Sui Tit Tong and Sophie Epperlein staged an epic 4-hour challenge, with captain Aly Wilson winning on Board 1, before finally losing 4-1 to their all-male, adult, very experienced opponents (Rose Forgrove of Yorkshire) who have in fact won the National title on several occasions. Aly Wilson and Sunena Patel, who respectively won the U15 and U13 'Suprema' titles at the British Land UK Chess Challenge Surrey Megafinal, will (together with six other members of St. Mark's) be competing in the National Gigafinal at Alexandra Palace in London on 20 August.
I am indebted to Mrs Lorna Bushell for the above account.

Coulsdon Chess Fellowship Saturday Schools League

The Croydon High School team (of course, all girls) entered by Aaron & Claire Summerscale were this term's winners of Division 3 of this event. They had won division 5 last term, but had been sucked into a higher division due to one or two teams not providing players. The team was captained by Anni Gilbert [Surrey], (sister of the better-known Jessie).
Croydon High School will be in Division 2 next time around.
