GMCCA Congress, 26-28 May 2000
The strong and improving U11 girl Katie A Martin of Ashton-u-Lyne did very well with an unbeaten 4/5 taking a Grading prize. Katie, who has been chosen as U12 Reserve for England Girls in the forthcoming match against Germany, had a performance grade of 115.
International Girls' Match against Germany, 8-9 July 2000
An International match between England and Germany is being held this Summer
in the prestige location of Canary Wharf in London Docklands. We have secured
this venue through the good offices of a parent, and we had originally hoped to
attract sponsorship on a scale large enough to allow us to hold a U14
International Jamboree. The sponsorship, sadly, has not materialised and our
only income has been very small amounts from one or two Trusts. This has meant
that we have had to borrow from private sources in order even to fund the German
match.
If any parent or other interested person would like to make a donation
towards the expenses of this venture, please get into touch with
bruce.birchall@btinternet.com who will be pleased to supply details.
A very
strong England team has been selected for this event. To view the selections,

ECGCF Eastern Region Jamboree, Bedford 20 May 2000
In this very exciting four-team competition, in which first place depended on
the very last game being played, Norfolk just pipped Bedfordshire by half a
point to become 2000 Eastern Region champions, and the very first winners of our
new Eastern Region trophy. Suffolk, whose strongest player Sophie Payne was not
available, were third, and the young Hertfordshire team, giving away an average
of over two years in age to the oldest team, were fourth.

EPSCA U11 [Mixed] Inter-Association Finals, Wirral, Cheshire 6 May 2000
The winners were Sussex, and they deserve our hearty congratulations. No
County has done more to develop and sustain an active approach to junior chess
than have Sussex. We are very pleased indeed to see them reap the rewards of
this. The victorious Sussex team included three girls who played their full part
in the triumph: on Board 3, Stephanie Barraclough scored 3/3; on Board 5,
Georgina Draper had 2/3; and on Board 19, Eleanor Hayden had 2/3.
Scores of
all the competing teams can be seen Here.
Richmond came in
second on tie-break over Hampshire. Wey Valley(Surrey) were placed fourth. The
Wey Valley team included many girls, and their individual scores can be seen
Here. It is not yet
known which other teams included girls. We hope to be able to make this
information available later.
