Berks and Bucks Congress, Reading 29-30 August 1999

There was an excellent result at this Congress for Lydia Goodwin [R year, Buckinghamshire] who was the outright winner of the 16-player Reserve A section (for players graded 123-147). Lydia had a clean sheet with 5/5 and also won the Cup for the best performance by a player under 14 years old.

British Championships, Scarborough 1-15 August 1999

The results of all girls playing in the 1999 British Championships are presented in tabular form below. If anyone finds omissions or errors in any of these results, I would be most obliged if they would let us know without delay so that the matter can be rectified.
Alec Webster writes of the successes of the Surrey players at Scarborough:
Pride of place the first week must go to Teresa and Selina Khoo.
Teresa became British U13 Girls' Champion (after a ding-dong battle with Aly Wilson - sadly they could not be paired), and Teresa also won a prize in a Weekend event.
Selina won both the British U8 Girls' title and also shared the U8 Championship with three boys, scoring 5/6. She followed this up by winning the British Girls' U9 title.
In the second week Sarah Hegarty played excellent chess to win the British Girls' U10 title and come equal fourth overall, following up her winning of the U11 Girls' totle the first week.
In the U12, Jessie Gilbert had to give way to Sabrina Chevannes [Warwickshire] (who won their individual encounter).
Jessica Dodson fought hard in the U9 and U10 events as did Hannah Dale in the U8 (she lost to Selina), Cherry Brearley in the U9 and Alex Kelly in the U14.
It was good to see several girls (not just from Surrey) competing in ean of the age group championships in what was an enjoyable two weeks, at least for the Control team!

Faber Cup, Bruges late July 1999

A new departure was the inclusion of a team from the Czech Republic as one of the 8 teams contesting the Faber Cup. The 'new girls' were first-time winners! The England team of Kanwal Bhatia [Durham], Iva Anguelov [Middlesex]and Elise Ford [Lancashire] did very well, coming third with 9½ points behind the Czech Republic (13½) and Holland (10½). Kanwal and Elise each scored 3/5 while Iva had a particularly impressive 3½/5.
