Jovanka and Harriet for Women's World Championship

Jovanka Houska of Berkshire and Harriet Hunt of Oxfordshire, both now out of their junior years, will play in the Women's World Championship Knockout tournament to be held in Kishinev, Moldova, 3-26 September this year.
Jovanka qualified at the Women's Zonal in St Vincent, Italy when, after leading the tournament all the way, a last-round loss caused her to become involved in a speed chess playoff, which she won. Harriet has been nominated by FIDE for a special place in the WWC.
We wish both these fine players every success in Moldova. They have both been excellent examples to younger players.

England selection for Louise

The strong Surrey T-year player Louise Newlands of St Mark's has been selected by the BCF to represent England U11 Girls in forthcoming events in Wales and Germany.

Surrey again winners of BCF Inter-County Girls

The Surrey First Team defeated Nottinghamshire 6-0 to win the BCF U18 Inter-County Girls competition for the ninth time, completing a second sequence of four consecutive wins similar to that of 1979-1982. The Minor Trophy went to Staffordshire who narrowly defeated Surrey II and the much-fancied Oxfordshire team. Can you help?

Another identity problem. We have got the two Katie Martins sorted out, (Katie A Martin of Lancashire and Katie E Martin of Kent), but does anyone out there know if "HEATHER WARMSLEY" who played for Liverpool in the recent EPSCA Girls at Basildon, but apparently has a Preston postcode, is the same girl as HEATHER WALMSLEY who played in the Lancashire Junior Congress at Rawtenstall in the early part of this year? Information would be appreciated. Please email sgcl@clara.net if you know the answer.

Aly to play in European Junior in Greece

The strong R-year player Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson has been selected by the BCF to represent England alongside Jessie Gilbert in the European Junior Championships to be held in Greece, 3-10 September.

EPSCA Inter-Association Girls, Basildon 15 May

The strong Wey Valley/Surrey team were again the winners of this popular competition which this year attracted some 17 teams of 12 girls each, plus reserves, to Woodlands School. Manchester came second, Kent third and Northamptonshire, who are much to be congratulated on this result against strong opposition, were fourth.

England Miss Out on Star U10 Girl!

Sarah Hegarty [U, Surrey], England's strongest U10 girl, will be representing the Republic of Ireland in this year's World and European Junior events, in Spain and Greece respectively. Irish officials, impressed by Sarah's 100% score in the recent All-Ireland Junior event in Dublin, have snapped her up. Sarah claims Irish eligibility through her father Donal, who is often seen at chess events with Sarah or her brothers. It should be ponited out that because the 'international' age date is 1 January rather than 1 September as used in UK junior events, Sarah will be playing at U12 level in these events, the same level as Jessie Gilbert.

Downs Open Junior, Worthing, 15 May

With most Sussex girls involved in the EPSCA Final of the same day, few entered this event. They included, in the 22-player U16, Rebecca Tuck (1/6 placed 19th) and in the 48-player U11: Laura Penfold (1½/6 placed 41-44) and Sarah Limmett (1/6 placed 45th).

ECGCF/Batsford National Girls Schools Championships, Hampton 9 May

Some 59 teams (236 girls) competing must have made some kind of a record for an all-girls chess event.
The U18 was won by 'home team' Lady Eleanor Holles school. Newcomers Southend High School were second, and we were also pleased to see North Chadderton, from Lancashire, back again after three years.
The U13 section was won by St Mark's Purley just ahead of Norwich High.
In the U11 First Teams section, however, Norwich High were the winners just one point ahead of Wellesley Park, Somerset.
Sutton High won the U9 First Teams, their very strong team of Jessica Dodson, Louise Hanger, Cherry Brearley and Deepa Patel returning a perfect 12/12 score.

EPSCA U11 Mixed Teams final, Heywood 8 May

Extracted from Lancashire Chess Association pages, with thanks:
"The finals of the EPSCA U11's took place at Heywood on May 8th. It was a close run contest with Richmond just pipping Essex for the title by a mere 1/2 point. Essex scored a very good score of 45.5/60 - this would have been enough in years gone by, but the wealthy Richmond club managed an extra half point to finish on 46/60. Even GM Chris Ward looked on with amazement at some of the outstanding play that resulted during the day. The event was a disappointment for the host team, Lancashire. They just did not perform on the day, finishing a disappointing 12th." Note, the Wey Valley team came fourth.
There were 34 girls playing in all, 29 in the Main and 5 in the Reserve section. Of the 16 teams involved, two (Lancashire and Yorkshire) brought no girls at all; two (Nottinghamshire and Richmond) used girls only in the Reserve sections. There were two all-girl clashes, Ashleigh Skinner (Northants 14) 1-0 Katie Davis (Suffolk 14) in the third round, and Briony Walker (Nottinghamshire Res 3) 1-0 Bethany Halpin (Liverpool Res 3) in the first round of the Reserves.
Two girls returned perfect scores, Abigail Flint (Essex 19) and Briony Walker (Nottinghamshire Res 3), but perhaps the very best achievement was that of Wey Valley's Sarah Hegarty, still a U10 (year U), right up at the sharp end on Board 1, who scored an excellent 2½/3.

London v The Rest Of England, Streatham 3 May

THE UK CHESS MEGAFINALS

Surrey Megafinals 1-2 May

The younger age-groups played on the Saturday. In the U9 Girls, Suprema Jessica Dodson had a clean-sheet 6/6, finishing 1½ points ahead of the next batch of six girls. In the U8 Girls, there was fierce competition at the top with well-known stars in action, and Hannah Dale, going into the last round half a point adrift, just had it from Selina Khoo to become Suprema. In the U7 Girls, two girls finshed on an identical 5½ points, so that a playoff was held in which Olivia Barber became Suprema by beating Natalie Hudson.
Sunday saw the older girls in action. The U10 was very closely contested with several star players involved. In the end, the bookies' favourite Sarah Hegarty just got in by half a point as Suprema in front of Rebecca Gilbert. The U11 brought well-deserved success to Abigail Archibald, who so often in the past has played very well but not been placed first - well, she is now U11 Suprema! The U13 included both R and S year girls, and Jessie Gilbert again won the Suprema title, though not without a close shave in her drawn game with second-placed Teresa Khoo. The handful of U15 girls played in with the U15/U18 boys, and Kate Feld's score of 4½/6 (placed 3-4 overall) was an excellent achievement, Kate of course winning the Suprema title.

Wales Megafinal, Monmouth 8 May

An outstanding perfect score of 6/6 gave Emma Hopkins of Ely the U9 Suprema title at Monmouth.

Middlesex Megafinals, Barnet 2-3 May

Well-known stars such as Iva Anguelov, Lucy Styles, Danielle Gross, Emilie Dannenberg and Poppy Aarons walked off with the Suprema titles firmly in their bags, in some cases scoring a perfect 6/6.

Western Megafinal, Torpoint 1 May

Devon took most of the Suprema titles, but Aline Sauze lifted the U15 Suprema title for Cornwall.

Mercia Megafinal, Telford 1 May

Although four Counties were represented at this Megafinal, Staffordshire girls took all but one of the Suprema titles, with the Moruzzi sisters winning at U9 and U7 level. The only exception to this Staffordshire triumph was in the U8, won by Herefordshire's Jenny Joseph.

Kent Megafinal, Maidstone 1 May

In the 14-player U13, Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson [R, Surrey] was the winner with a perfect 6/6 score, but of course was not allowed to win the Suprema title, as she was not playing in her own County.

Yorkshire Megafinal, Rotherham 1 May

Girls scored very well in this event: both Claire Moran (U11) and Kim Morton (U9) returning perfect 6/6 scores to become Supremas. Sisters Brooke and Sophie Rhodes also scored well with 5/6 in the U11 and U10 respectively, with younger sister Sophie becoming Suprema.
