Tonbridge Junior Tournament 25 April
In the U10 Section, best girl was Fiona Smailes [U, Surrey] who scored 4½/6 placed 4-7 out of 43 entrants. Other girls: Katie Martin and Bess Novitt, each 3; Katy Cunningham, Jasmine King and Rachel Thomas, all 2; Claire Gower, 1½; Heather Russell-Kay and Aliide Naylor, each 1; and Hannah Lom, 0. All these girls presumed Kent.
England U11 Trials, Liverpool 24-25 April
This took the format of a Closed Tournament for the strongest dozen players, and a Trial Tournament (Swiss) for the remaining 52. There were no girls in the Closed section, but five girls played in the Trial Tournament as follows: Elizabeth Roberts [Cheshire] 4/5; Kathryn Barnes [Suffolk] and Claire Morris [Oxfordshire] each 2½; Danielle Gross [Middlesex] 1½; and Charlotte Wilcox [Staffordshire] 1.
EPSCA U9 Team Finals, Heywood 24 April
Of the 16 teams attending this event, five (Barnet, Nottinghamshire, Wirral,
Northamptonshire, and Cornwall) brought no girls at all. Two further teams
(Lancashire and Hampshire) only had girls in the Reserve section. Not
surprisingly, none of these seven teams finished among the top three.
Winners
were Wey Valley, who just pipped the strong Sussex team, with Richmond placed
third. In the Main section, Wey Valley had three girls who scored 7/9: Sussex
had one, who scored 3/3: and Richmond had one, (like the other Richmond girl who
was a reserve, this girl was a Surrey Girls Chess League member) who scored
2/3.
There only appears to have been one girl v. girl encounter, which
occurred in Round 2 when Emma Warren (Somerset) played Louise Hanger (Wey
Valley), resulting in a win for Louise, who is one of only three girls to return
a maximum 3/3 score, the other two being Stephanie Barraclough [Sussex] and
Rachel Gilbert [Somerset]. In this context, it should be mentioned that
Stephanie has maintained a perfect 100% record in all EPSCA competitions so far
this year.

ECGCF Eastern Region playoff, Scunthorpe 27 March
This most enjoyable event was organised by Jill and Peter Turner and saw four
teams competing in the Champions section for the right to play in the ECGCF
Finals on 3 July at Abingdon. Play was over three rounds at 40 minutes ppg. In
the end, the strong Nottinghamshire team ran out as winners with 10/12 over
North Lincolnshire in second place with 9/12, Lincolnshire and North East
Lincolnshire each scoring 2½/12. Nottinghamshire thus qualify for the Finals but
since Lincolnshire (real county) had divided their strength over three teams,
they will also compete in the Finals, with team selection to be made from all
parts of the Real County.
In the Challengers section, there were also four
teams, two from schools (Bottesford and Leys Farm), one from North East
Lincolnshire (Grimsby area), and one labelled Yorkshire which in fact contained
just two Yorkshire girls helped out by two local girls. Placings: 1. Bottesford,
9; 2. Leys Farm, 6½; 3. North East 5; and 4, Yorkshire 3½. Between the rounds IM
Matthew Turner was on hand to give a simul, and he also went through games with
some of the girls.
