Smith and Williamson British Championships, Torquay 29 July - 9 August 2002
The British is over for another year. In the British
Championship. leading female was Indian WGM Humpy Koneru with an excellent 7/11, but girls'
performance of the Tournament has to go to our own Teresa Khoo with a stupendous 7/11 in the
Major Open. This gave her a performance rating of 2181 FIDE, I can't work out the maths but it
can't be far short of 200 BCF!
In the U14, Claire Morris of Oxfordshire was top girl.
In the U12, three girls finished equal on 4½/7 -
they are Poppy Aarons [Middlesex], Naomi Miller [Oxfordshire] and Selina Khoo [Surrey].
Stephanie Barraclough [Sussex] was just half a point behind them, and Chantal Sirisena another
half-point away.
Anya Corke of Hong Kong was the joint winner of the U11 with an excellent 6/7; Selina Khoo [Surrey] and
Ellie Hayden [Sussex] each had 5/7.
Amy Officer was top girl in the U10, placed third overall with 5½/7.

UK Chess Challenge National Gigafinals, Sheffield 20-21 July 2002
More than 1600 players took part in the two-day Gigafinals at Sheffield University, but due to the excellent organisation by Mike Basman and his team, all went very smoothly indeed. The standard of play, as well as the numbers taking part, increases each year and in some of the Girls' sections, playoffs were necessary in order to determine who would hold the "Ultima" title. In the end, the winners of this Title were as follows: U 7, Caroline Foster [Surrey]; U 8, Rhian Hughes [Scotland]; U 9, Larissa Cooke [Oxfordshire]; U 10, Amisha Parmar [Derbyshire]; U 11, Selina Khoo [Surrey]; U 12, Stephanie Barraclough [Sussex]; U 13, Katherine Rattle [Sussex]; U 14, Claire Morris [Oxfordshire]; U 15, Sabrina Chevannes [Warwickshire]; and U 18, Alexandra "Aly" Wilson [Surrey]. Thus three Ultima titles went to Surrey and two each to Sussex and Oxfordshire.
