Surrey take ECGCF Grand Cup for Fourth Year, Abingdon 29 June 2002

The strong Surrey Girls U14 team, with 14/18, defeated close rivals Wiltshire (12½) and Staffordshire (11½) in the Fourth ECGCF Grand Final, with Oxfordshire (6) fourth and Norfolk (1) fifth. The parallel Minor Counties final saw Middlesex retain the Petit Coup with 13½/18, in front of Somerset (9), Cheshire (8½) and Bedfordshire (5)

42nd Richmond Rapidplay, 23 June 2002

The Open section had 10 players but no girls. The Major U160 had 19 players with two girls: Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] placed 3-4 with 4/6, while Teresa Khoo [Surrey] was 5-9 with 3½.
The only girl in the 18-player Intermediate U120 was Selina Khoo [Surrey] placed 7-8 with 3½/6, while in the Minor U80 there were 40 players with 5 girls as follows: 6-12 Stephanie Epperlein [Surrey] and Kate Richards [Middlesex] each with 4/6; 13-16 was Antonia Round [Middlesex] with 3½; and 17-25 were Alexandra Botteman [Middlesex] and Katie Houstoun [Surrey] each with 3.

South West England v Wales, 9 June 2002

In this annual match, the South West defeated Wales by 16½ to 7½ at U14 level, but the U11 match was drawn 12-12. A few girls played in the match. To see the complete results, click U14 or U11.

UK Chess Challenge Megafinal Results

4NCL Qualification Weekend, 1-2 June 2002

The reasoning behind this event and a full description of its mechanics and the full results will be found on the 4NCL Website, but the results of all the girls who took part have been added to our summary of girls' performances in 4NCL, available through our Links page.
The weekend saw three girls making their 4NCL debut: Karen Bradley turned out for North West Eagles, (she is the third strong Lancashire girl trained by 3Cs alongside Katie A Martin and Robyn Smith), and had an excellent beginning, defeating Paul Plant, who is rated almost 500 higher, in her first game. Heather Burgess of Wiltshire and Chantal Sirisena of Surrey each had one game for Guildford-ADC, but in neither case did any points accrue. Other excellent wins by girls were (1) that of Yasmin Ball [Berkshire] in the second round, defeating Alan Pleasants, 560 higher than herself, (2) also in Round 2, Katie A Martin of Lancashire, playing for the recently re-named Numerica 3Cs, defeated Michael Rose of Athenaeum, in this case rated about 300 higher than Katie, (3)Robyn Smith, with two wins out of two, finishes her first season in 4NCL with a score of 3½/4 - 87.5%!

First Surrey Classic, Epsom 1-2 June 2002

This five-round tournament featured the Basman scoring system in which players receive 3 points for a win and one point for a draw, similar to that used by the Football League.
A total of 43 players took part, and there were three sections: In the Open, 6 players, no girls; In the Major, 12 players, there was 1 girl, Selina Khoo who was placed 3-8 scoring 7/15.
In the Minor, 25 players, there were seven girls, all Surrey, as follows: 3-5 Jemima McGraw, 12/15; 6-11 Stephanie Epperlein 9; 12 Marissa Stenning, 7; and 13-19 Jessica Thilaganathan, Nicola Smith, Thilagini Anandajeyarajah, and Louisa Ellis, all 6. SCCU U14/U90 Competition, Final Jamboree, Oxford 1 June 2002

The Sussex team, with 16½ points, were the winners over Middlesex GCA (12 points) and Oxfordshire (7½ points) in this 2-round jamboree. The Sussex team featured, on Board 1, Stephanie Barraclough who scored 2/2; and on Board 7, Ellie Hayden, also 2/2. The Middlesex GCA team used, on Board 5, Chantal Sirisena of Surrey who scored 1 /2; on Board 11, Antonia Round of Middlesex who scored ½/2; and on Board 12, Katie Houstoun of Surrey, who scored ½/2.
