London U11 v The Rest Of England (Mixed), Streatham 25 May 2002

In a match played at Immanuel School, over 30 boards and two rounds, The Rest Of England defeated London U11s by a total of 37½ to 22½.
The London team only used two girls: on Board 1, Selina Khoo [Surrey] who scored 1½/2; and on Board 9, Claire Wu [Middlesex] who had ½/2. The Rest team included six girls: Board 13, Hannah Dale [Surrey] 1½/2; Board 17, Ellie Hayden [Sussex], 1 /2; Board 18, Katie Hale [Somerset] 2/2; Board 20, Amisha Parmar, 1 /2; Board 25, Victoria Crompton [Cheshire] 1 /2; and Board 27, Roukaya Georgiou [Bedfordshire], 1 /2. Surrey Junior Championships, Carshalton 25 May 2002

With a new organising team of Graeme Buckley and Susan Lalic, the Surrey Junior Championships event was a great success, with some 207 players attending of whom 38 were girls. There were some notable performances by the girls, of which perhaps the best were the second equal by Jemima McGraw in the combined U18/U14, and the first equal by Antonia Round of Middlesex in the U11 Major.

Downs Open Junior, Worthing 17 May 2002

In the U18 Minor, Katherine Rattle was placed second with 4½/6, while in the U11 Major, Ellie Hayden had a brilliant 6/6 to finish clear first.

North and East Hertfordshire Congress, Stevenage 12 May 2002

The various age-groups, both boys and girls, played in together in one section. Yvette Cook had an outstanding result, placed 1-2 with a perfect 5/5, then came: 3-8 Rebecca Allen 4; 25-33 Fiona Whiting 2; 34-38 Jessica Pugh 1½; 39-41 Victoria Spooner and Molly Veitch, each 1; and 42-44 Catherine Spooner and Ana Alexander each ½. All girls Hertfordshire.

ECGCF/Batsford National Girls Team Tournament, Hampton 12 May 2002

The largest all-girls chess tournament in Britain attracted this year some 36 teams with 144 players, in four sections plus two reserve sections. The results, including players' names and their scores, can be seen Here.

EPSCA U11 Mixed Teams, Basingstoke 11 May 2002

The Wey Valley Mixed U11 Team were the winners, for the first time for quite a few years, of the EPSCA Inter-Association U11 Team competition. The Wey Valley team included five girls (there were two more in the Reserves), and of these five, four of them scored maximum points of 3/3. We do not know how many of the other teams used girls, but you can safely bet that there was no other team with as many as 5, and there would be some teams without any girls at all. Four Nations Chess League, Rounds 9, 10 and 11, 4-6 May 2002

Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] had 3/3 (although one of them was a default) in the final 4NCL weekend. Several girls completed all 11 rounds this season. Our table of all girls' 4NCL performances has been updated, and can be found Here.

London Girls v The Rest Of England, Streatham 6 May 2002

This long-established fixture resulted in another large win for The Rest Of England, which continues the trend of recent years. This time the score was 39-9. You can see all of the details Here.

Tonbridge Junior Congress, 4 May 2002

There were no girls in the 17-player U8 Section, but 9 out of 41 were girls in the U10s, scoring as follows: Anabel Flamank, Georgiana Philippou, Alexandra Kidson, Jenny Martin, and Jennifer McKeever, all 3/6; Florence Warrener and Maria Malik, 2½; Kristina Perry 2; and Sophie Malik 1. In the 30-player U11s were three girls: Caroline Gregory and Victoria McAulay both 3; and Elizabeth Mills 2½. The only girl in the 29-player U14/U18 was Bess Novitt who did not score.
