40th Richmond Rapidplay, Hampton 24 February 2002

There were some excellent results for girls in this popular event, with several newcomers taking part. In the Intermediate, Selina Khoo [Surrey] was the clear winner, with Stephanie Barraclough [Sussex] second; in the Major U160, Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] was joint second, and in the Minor, Deepa Patel [Surrey] and Kate Richards [Middlesex] shared second place. Wiltshire and West of England Championships, Swindon 23-24 February 2002

A splendid total of no less than 40 girls took part in the various sections of this event. The results, kindly supplied by Mrs Helena Thomas, can be seen Here.

Mount Grace UKCC event, Hertfordshire 18 February 2002

A UKCC event was held at Mount Grace School on Monday 18th February 2002. 46 juniors took part, with 30 qualifying for the Megafinal.
The competition was won overall by Yvette Cook with maximum points, Avinoam Baruch and Thomas Gosling were second with 19 points (out of 21). Five players scored 17 points. Of the qualifiers, several were from the same family, notably Yvette and Luc Cook, Thomas, Joseph and Alice Gosling, Sophie and Alex Davies, Oscar and Lewis Grounds and Catherine and Martin Wasilewski. Other girls who qualified were Louise Haycocks and Alexandra Withers, both playing in their first public competition.

Middlesex Girls CA Trounce 'official' Middlesex, Harrow 23 February 2002

In the U14/U90 match between these two sides, MGCA, fielding a team with 5 girls and 7 boys, easily defeated the 'official' Middlesex team (all boys) by the wide margin of 19½-4½. To see the details of this match, Click Here.

Wey Valley Ramsey Cups Tournament, Reigate 17 February 2002

The number of girls was slightly depleted, as six of the stronger players were at York. To see all the Ramsey Cups results, Click Here.

BWCA National Girls, York 16-17 February 2002

A total of 47 girls, almost twice as many as last year, entered this event, which was divided between three sections.
In the U14/U12, (10 players) Colleen Halpin [Lancashire] and Charlotte Wilcox [Staffordshire] were joint first with 4½/6. Katy Smowton was third with 4, and also received a prize for the best performance by a Yorkshire girl. Best U12 was Katie Nightingale [Bedfordshire] with 3½.
The largest section was the U11/U10 with 27 players, and here Ellie Hayden of Sussex gave a faultless performance as clear first with 7/7 in front of Emma G Williams [Hertfordshire] with 6. Katie Hale, now of Somerset, previously Essex, was the best U10 with 5/7.
The U9/U8 was played as a 9-round all-play-all, and here the two Surrey girls dominated with Jessica Thilaganathan first with 8/9 and Sheila Dines second with 7½. The youngest player, Stephanie Hale, still actually a U7, was top U8 with 3½/9.

Selina Draws against Jon Speelman, 10 February 2002

Prizewinners from the London Junior Chess Congress took part in two simuls. against GM Jon Speelman and IM Michael Hennigan, themselves LJCC prizewinners of former years. Selina Khoo [Surrey] had a draw against Speelman. Othe girls taking part were Sheila Dines [Surrey] and Katie Hale [Somerset] who both lost to Speelman; and Amisha Parmar [Derbyshire] and Stephanie Hale [Somerset] who both lost to Hennigan.

Capelle La Grande Open, Dunkerque February 2002

Two English girls took part in this important tournament. WFM Jessie Gilbert of Surrey scored 3½/9, and Katie A Martin of Lancashire, in what was her first time in a Continental tournament, had an excellent 4/9. SCCU Inter-County u18 Team Championships, 10 February 2002 - A Double Win for Surrey!

St Paul's School at Barnes provided the venue for this large event in which eight Open (mixed) County teams of 12, and three County girls' teams of six competed. The event was very capably organised by the new SCCU Junior Organiser, Pat Aarons.
In the Girls' event, the powerful Surrey team, captained by the popular Kate Feld, won without conceding as much as half a point, while in the Open, the all-boys Surrey team came first with 17½ points with Essex as runners-up. 2nd Stanway Chess Challenge, Dorking 9 February 2002

Around 140 players, many of them new to competitive chess, took part in this tournament organised by Mrs Kathy Vanucci. There were three age groups and a large proportion of girls. To see all the girls' results, Click Here.

South of England Championships, Yateley, Hampshire 2-3 February 2002

The only girl prizewinners were: in the U14 Closed, Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] was Joint first. In the U12 closed, Stephanie Barraclough [Sussex] was joint third; in the U11 Challengers, Stephanie Hargraves [Hampshire] was third; and in the U8, Georgia Stephenson [Buckinghamshire] was joint third.
