Barnet Schools Chess Association Junior Tournament, 27 January 2002

Over 180 players took part. The leading girls in each Section were as follows:
(U19: 4 players, 0 girls)
U14: 24 players, 1 girl: Kate Richards [Middlesex] 1/5
U12: 20 players, 2 girls: Nathalie Wong [Middlesex] and Katie Houstoun [Surrey] each 3½/5
U11: 17 players, 3 girls including Claire Wu [Middlesex] 5/6, Amisha Parmar [Derbyshire] 4/6
U10: 41 players, 8 girls including Thilagini Anandajeyarajah [Surrey] and Laura Sartenaer [? county] each 3/6
U9: 28 players, 4 girls. Leading girl Sheila Dines [Surrey] 5/6
U8: 47 players. Leading girl Joanna Wu [Middlesex] 3½/6

Langley Park Junior Tournament, 26 January 2002

The first Kent junior tournament of the year attracted 99 players of whom exactly one-eleventh were girls. No girls played in the U18 or U16, each of which had 4 players. In the U14, Bess Novitt had 2/6 and Anna Richards had 1, total of 25 players in all; In the U11 there were 5 girls among the 42 players. Best were Alexandra Kidson and Victoria Macauley, each with 3/6, while Jena Kitley, Jennifer Martin and Alexandra Richards each had 2½; and the two girls in the 24-player U9 were Jennifer McKeever with 4 and Georgiana Philippou with 3. All girls Kent.

Wey Valley U12 and U9 Tournament, Leatherhead 20 January 2002

A large number of girls took part in this event, and in the U12 Section, Chantal Sirisena [Surrey] was the joint winner with a perfect 5/5 score. To see all of the results, with the girls picked out for easy identification, Click Here.

Richmond Girls, 20 January 2002

This 18-player tournament was won by the talented young Surrey player, Sheila Dines. For the full cross table, Click Here.

Richmond Rapidplay, 13 January 2002

Just 100 players in all competed in the four sections. The only girl in the 23-player Open was Jessie Gilbert [Surrey] who scored 3/6 placed 10-15 out of 23 players. The two girls in the Major (22 players in all) were Anna Partington [Surrey] placed 1-2 with 5/6 and Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] placed 10-13 with 3/6. Just one girl in the Intermediate - Naomi Miller [Oxfordshire] who scored 4½/6, but five girls altogether in the 36-player Novice section: in order of score these were: 4-12 Katie Houston [Surrey] 4/6, 14-22 Sheila Dines [Surrey], Kate Richards [Middlesex] and Marissa Stenning [Surrey], all 3/6; and 29-30 Thiagini Anandajeyarajah [Surrey] with 2/6.

Norfolk take Eastern Region Cup, Norwich 12 January 2002

The strong Norfolk team scored a decisive victory in the ECGCF Eastern Region Jamboree when, scoring 14 points, they outclassed opponents Bedfordshire (8) and Suffolk (5). Norfolk thus proceed to the Grand Final to be held at Abingdon on 29 June, while Bedfordshire, as second placed team, get an invitation to the Minor Final on the same day. Lancashire Chess Association Chorley Junior Congress, 12 January 2002

Hastings Junior Congress, 5 January 2002

Hastings International Chess Congress 2001-2002

Three girls played in the 140-strong Challengers section, which had 8 GMs and no less than 24 IMs involved. Best of the girls was Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson [Surrey], with a very impressive 4½/10, while Sabrina Chevannes [Warwickshire] and Jessie Gilbert [Surrey] also did very well, each scoring 4/10.
In the New Year C section (16 players), Poppy Aarons [Middlesex] was joint first with 4/5, while Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] placed 6-7 with 3/5 and Selina Khoo [Surrey] was 9-12 with 2/5.
In the Christmas D section, (22 players), Ellie Hayden [Sussex] placed 19-21 with 1/5, while in the Weekend Novice (41 players), Stephanie Barraclough [Sussex] was placed 4-6 with 4½/6, and in the 54-payer Weekend Minor, Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] was placed 7-14 with 4/6.
