England Women take Bronze Medals

Playing at the European Team Championships in Leon, the England Women's team took bronze behind France and Moldova. SGCL President WGM Susan Lalic, the England board 3, had a superb 5/5, the kind of result almost unheard of in team competitions, where often there is a certain amount of wheeling and dealing resulting in short draws. Not here, though, so Susan took the Gold medal for the best individual Board 3 performance.

Surrey and South Eastern Counties Girls Chess Congress, Epsom 4 November 2001

In a new venue and with a new date some three weeks earlier than previously, we were somewhat concerned that competiton from the Richmond Junior event on the same day might prevent a good entry. We need not have worried. Some 110 girls sat down to play, our highest total ever.
The U18/U14 Section was tied between Irish international Hannah Lowry-O'Reilly and a new find, Jemima McGraw of Notre Dame School, Lingfield, a late convert to the game who only learned to play earlier this year. Since Hannah has no Surrey qualification, and Jemima is a U14, the latter took both the Elaine Saunders and the Kim Williams trophies.
Eleanor Hayden of Sussex won the U12 with 5/5 but has no Surrey qualification, so the Ann Hopton Trophy is shared between runners-up Katie Houstoun and Louise Hanger, each 4/5.
The clear winner of the U10 was Marissa Stenning with a perfect 5/5, thus taking the Yellen Trophy, and there was also a clear winner in the U8 section, the Susan Walker Trophy going to Stephanie Dye, also with 5/5.
Bjorn The Bear was won by Lucy Dent of Bedfordshire, his brother Benny going to Ruth Cooper [Surrey]: these two being the leading U7s.
