Teresa Gains Full FIDE Rating, July 2001

Playing in the FIDE rated 11-round Section of the Smith and Williamson Young Masters, Teresa Khoo [Surrey] scored 5/11 so obtaining a full FIDE rating of 2055, (equivalent to 182 BCF). Four other English girls (Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson and Alex Kelly, both Surrey; Lydia Goodwin, Buckinghamshire; and Sabrina Chevannes, Warwickshire) also played in the event as well as five girls from overseas, but no other girl scored highly enough to obtain a full rating. Surrey's Captains for season 2001-2002

For Surrey's U18 Girls team, which will take part in the BCF Inter-County Girls competition, Kate Feld will continue as Captain for next season.
Surrey's U14 Captain, in the ECGCF competition, will be Louise Newlands of St. Mark's School of Chess.
There will be a Selection Tournament for this team on Saturday 15 September at Immanuel School in Streatham, and those invited will be notified.

SGCL's French Connection

Our member Natalie Hudson has been based in Paris for almost two years. She has continued to be a keen player, and last year won a prize as the best U9 girl in the Paris Championships. Natalie just missed out (she was fourth, but only three were selected) in a competition to represent the Paris region in the French championships.

36th Richmond Rapidplay, 15 July 2001

This event clashed with the UK Chess Challenge Gigafinal, so less girls than usual entered: however, the four that did so were: In the Open, (23 players) Sophie Tidman [Warwickshire] was placed 10-11 with 3/6 and Jessie Gilbert [Surrey] was placed 12-17 with 2½; in the Major U160, (14 players), Anna Partington [Surrey] had 2nd prize with 5/6; there were no girls in the Intermediate U 120 (21 players), but in the Minor U80 (17 players), Antonia Round [Middlesex] placed 6-12 with 3/6. Surrey Girls Excel at Gigafinals, 14-15 July 2001

Surrey girls did well at the UK Chess Challenge gigafinals in Sheffield, taking the Ultima title in no less than four of the eight girls' sections.
The various Ultimi titles went to the followiing girls: U7, Zahra Amirabadi [Nottinghamshire]; U8, Sheila Dines [Surrey]; U9, Amisha Parmar [Derbyshire]; U10, Hannah Dale [Surrey]; U11, Robyn Smith [Lancashire]; U13, Sarah Hegarty [Surrey]; U15, Alexandra 'Aly' Wilson [Surrey]; and U18, Heather Coupe [Yorkshire].
