British Land UK Chess Challenge, National Terafinal, Alexandra Palace 26-27 August 2000

In the main Terafinal, Top Girl was Rosalind Kieran [Kent] with 3½/5, just half a point ahead of Sarah Hegarty [Surrey] and Sabrina Chevannes [Warwickshire], who tied for second place.
In the Challengers, there was a tie for first place between Catherine David [Oxfordshire] and Rachael Wilkinson [Somerset], following a superb last round win by Rachael. Third place went to Robyn Smith [Lancashire], still a U10 - a very good effort indeed.

The 2000 Grading List

The BCF Grading List has now arrived, and as usual we have compiled Top Girls lists for both England and Wales U18 Girls, and England and Wales Top U14 Girls. The new lists can be accessed by clicking in the appropriate place in the box at the head of News items.
It can be seen what remarkable advances many girls have made. In the U14 list, the top girl Jessie Gilbert [Surrey] is no less than 39 points in front of her nearest rival!
If you have a BCF Long or Rapidplay grade of at least 42, you should appear on at least one of the lists. If you only have a Welsh Chess Union grade, which are on a different scale and so cannot be exactly compared, you will not be listed, I regret to say.

Smith and Williamson British Championships, Millfield, Somerset 1-14 August 2000

First of all, hearty congratulations to Julian Hodgson, again winner of the British - a splendid performance! And also to Chris Ward, clear second. It must be said that both Julian and Chris have been most supportive of girls' chess, and completely free from the unpleasant sneering attitude still unfortunately found in just one or two British GMs.

The results of the girls who competed can be found here as far as they are known to me. An outstanding performance was that of Alexandra Kelly [Surrey] in becoming joint winner of the U15 Open title.

Personally it seems to me that the system whereby entries are accepted from distant countries which now have little or no relationship with Britain should be revised - otherwise, the event is not really a British event at all!
